Leadership or Management Pipeline?
Simon Buzza, Member
This appears to be a very helpful model for understanding management roles and planning management development. However, it also seems to be something of a misnomer as there is a clear difference between management and leadership. Leadership is about having a vision for a group that sets a direction that they follow.
Management controls or directs people/resources in a group according to processes or values that have already been established. So, this model might better be described as the management pipeline.

If one assumes Drotter's position that management and leadership or two sides of the same coin and that one is actually a manager-leader (or a leader-manager), it is is not important whether this is called a management or a leadership pipeline.
During a session with Drotter, he indicated that he uses the terms synonymously.

I agree with Jaques. The debate of management versus leadership is over - there is agreement in most literature that the requirement is for both. We have found it more valuable to explore the issue from a complexity (SST) perspective in terms of how the various transiitons relate to both capability and competence.
