Hotel Sustainability: Put Humans in Focus
Benjamin Lephilibert, Entrepreneur, Thailand
It always saddens me to see how often sustainability in the hotel industry is actually led by engineers, projects are being considered mechanical, like the energy consumption or the sewage system.
However it is hard to find any industry where HUMANS play a more important role than tourism in general, and hotel in particular.
Not only hotels are big employers (ratio 0.4 employees/room up to 4+/room), but they are also dealing primarily with guests, as well as with local communities.
For this reason, Human Resources as a department should be instrumental in implementing any project.
What we are advocating at LightBlue is that social innovation in general, including behavioral science for staff and guests, service design, participatory management, social proofing, incentives and empowerment of staff are the greatest drivers of change when it comes to increase sustainability of hotel operations.
We have a few case studies we could share, but would be very curious to hear any innovative hotel sustainability program you may have come across... Please share :-).
