Chair of the Board (CoB) in USA and Canada
In North America and Canada there are many derivatives related to the term "CEO". In the association world, of which I am a part of, associations will have a Chair of the Board (CoB) who is the chief elected person and who presides over the Board and is the top of the governance chain of that organization. The CEO is the Chief Staff Officer (CSO), an employee. In many cases the term used was Executive Director (ED), but with new updated governance models the term is CEO.
There are also examples in which the CSO has a combined title of "President and CEO" and other examples where the chief elected person is titled "President and Chair of the Board". These titles depend on what the role and responsibilities are within the By Laws and the corporate governance framework.
