Dear Supriya, there is no "versus" between advertising and positioning, the later is the key of success that differentiates your product/service from your competitors'. If your positioning or simply said "what your product/service stands for" is clear then your advertising manager can develop the proper way how to promote your brand / product / service - the brand advertising strategy. The so called "genetic code" of a brand is a way how to analyze if there is a sustainable positioning. Hope this is an answer that helps.
