. Define a project with a concrete planning and milestones. Make sure to define a goal to be reached by the end of the project, and a scale to measure that goal. For instance: by May 2011, we want to reduce our total maintenance costs by x%.
The next step is to measure what the current maintenance costs are, and how they should be (perhaps using case studuies).
This being done, you can define points for improvement and improvement actions accordingly.
Watch the obvious but often forgotten pitfalls: keep up to the planning and ensure yourself of organizational support/buy-in from the beginning of the project!
