Sources for Resource Based View
In order to find possible / potential sources for the resource based view, I recommend you look into the company's:
(1) Tangible and intangible assets (maybe financial position, or company software, or or a customer need database is so strong others can't imitate)
(2) Processes (for instance the ability to design and change the design according to customer needs or vertical integration)
(3) Skills (employee experience, competencies, and knowledge)
(4) Leadership (can be rare as with GE/Welch or Apple/Jobs).
Any additonal suggestions?

Possible Sources for Resource Based View
Irfan, your comments are very good. They should be part of every analysis of resources.

Knowledge Based View
Most of these virtues are addressed in knowledge based view (KBV) of the firm which have moved from 'resources' to ' capability'. KBV focuses on capability building which is different from resource choosing.
It is the knowledge application by the firm which is inimitable (at least for sometime).
Leadership (capability of the leader), for sure, is inimitable. Leader can envision, link and put capability of resources to the best use.
Intangibility of assets is all about its application that the leadership can envision. Similarly the employee skills is something that the leadership can put to the best use by creating the right structure and culture.
