New Trends in Transport and Logistics
RUTARO PATRICK, Business Consultant, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Premium Member
What are the new developments in the transport and logistics industry with special emphasis on the following: growth of 3PLs, 4PLs, increased bulk carriage, increased use of unit loads, air freight and documentation. Thanks.

The new trend on the 3PLs, 4PLs is that most companies have realised they have to focus spending their valuable time and resources on their core business areas.
Even in the third world countries, no company can do without 3PLs. Most companies engage themselves in contracts with services providers, unknowingly that they are involved in contracts logistics.

Most companies I think develop relations with 3PLs because they want to have the most appropriate rates especially when dealing with exports to unknown territories.
I find it very wise because you deal with clients effectively even without knowing them or having to worry.

I think 3PLs and 4PLs will become more instrumental in enabling collaboration between companies - competing or otherwise.
Also a quick point about Manda's entry - surely logistics is core to the business - delivery on time in full etc. The argument for outsourcing should be that it is not a core competence!
Further trends will include greater emphasis on the environment and e-commerce.

3 PLs and 4PLs in supply chain management can help manufacturers or distributors to focus more on their core competence. That can be a competitive advantage when it's managed properly.

@Gwynne Richards: A logistic arm can create a core competence and can be an added value for MNC rather than outsourcing. And with the recent development in the truck manufacturing industries it can be achieved with great sucess.
