Definition Hospitality Management. Description


Hospitality Management (HM) is the specialized field of management services within the hospitality services industry.

'Hospitality industry' is an umbrella term that includes the following 6 segments and types of services companies:

  • LODGING: Hotels, Motels, Hostels, B&Bs, Resorts, Campings, etc.
  • FOOD SERVICES: Restaurants, Catering Companies, etc.
  • TRAVEL: Air Lines, Cruise Lines, Rail Services, Car Rentals, etc.
  • TOURISM: Travel Agencies, Tour Operators, Visitor Centers, etc.
  • SPORTS: Arenas, Country Clubs, Sport Clubs, etc.
  • ENTERTAINMENT: Cinemas, Theaters, Amusement Parks, Theme Parks, Festivals, Ceremonies, Parties, Concerts, Convention Centers, etc.

Characteristics of hospitality businesses


The above mentioned companies have some common traits:

  • The 'product' normally is a service
  • The services provided are typically:
    • Personal
    • Perishable - the probability of the service ceasing to exist or becoming unusable within a limited amount of time
    • Intangible - the state of being abstract, impossible to touch
    • Changeable - the condition of being subject to change or alteration
  • Because they're always dealing with customers in a personal way, employees and managers typically require:
    • A service-oriented attitude (authenticity, professionalism and actual concern for the happiness and well-being of customers)
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Superb service skills
    • Flexibility
