Idea / Supply Chain and Quality

Small-scale producers have generally been not given enough information to enable the add value to their produces which is making the Agribusiness industry operates in an isolate units of players, hence there is need to provide the small-scale producers with apdated knowledge if they aye to contribute to the national development.

One of the most critical challenges faced by Agribusiness is orienting production and marketing to the consumers. I have more concern in explaining factors that influences small-scale farmers in developing countries from adding value to their produces. So far I have observed, challenges and constraints faced by small-scale producers, with respect to food processing, food safety and quality management and this can be assessed through field participatory studies. Further I synthesise information obtained to diagnose the situation in developing countries with respect to constraints and existing opportunities. Meanwhile, the results show that, product diversification through food processing, improved quality and safety thereby creates a market oriented agricultural sector. Consumers demand a diverse range of high quality safe products. The food processing sector is constrained by: inadequate processing methods, lack of access to equipment and packaging, weak linkages with producers and poor marketing skills. The sector remains largely unexploited, allowing imported foods to dominate internal markets. If small-scale were to develop there is need to recommend the establishment of value added food chains that are consumer oriented and therefore competitive by carrying out the following actions: Provide training and technical support in improved processing methods, new product development, food safety/quality management and marketing skills, Establishing producer owned food processing enterprises in rural areas, Strengthening producer-processor relationships, Reviewing existing food safety policies, translating international food standards into producer/processor codes of practice and adopting them into national standards through a bottom up approach and stakeholder participation.

Key words: Small-scale farmers, Value addition, Agribusiness, Food processing, quality management, Developing countries.
