Strategy is too often misunderstood

In today's fast paced world strategy is too often considered to be a limitation more than an enabler of business results

Too many business managers strategy has come to represent an old way of thinking or planning that does not accomodate the needs for the dynamic world of business today. What many fail to understand is the significance of the strategic process - understanding your markets, your competitors, the customers, and other forces at work both for and against you. In addition, managers consider strategies as roads that must be taken, versus alternatives or routes that are available to choose from. And in the end, too often time is not allowed for strategic planning and instead we find ourseleves in the old 'ready, fire, aim' scenario. All this is not to say that there is no hope, but rather, too keep strategic thinking relevant we need to continously reinforce the real-time effects of strategic thinking, measure the connection between real-world results and strategic themes, and the overall need to continuously remind business managers of the underlying nature of strategic methods and tools and their value in business decision-making today. It always surprises me when I use a strategic tool invented in the 80's or even 90's with a group of people and they react like it is brilliant insight never before experieinced!
