Differentiating KPIs From objectives

I am a bit confused about nominating KPI as a measurement tool of an objective. In my opinion an objective in itself contain its measurementy mechanism and there is no need for another tool. Key Performance Indicator (KPI) in fact is the measure of an organisations health and relates to an organisations long term goals.Followowing are some views: Think objective as a goal to be achieved and KPI as a measure on how one is performing towards the goal. if you think KPI as a measure on how one is performing towards the goal, you do not need to set KPI goal. Is it sensible. The objective is the goal. It has to respect the SMART rule (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-determined). Though KPI you determined if certain objective is fulfill or not. So, they respond to the M part.
