Be a leader not a dictator

The way to get employees to get the job done; and it works for me, is to get their buy-in. Make them understand how important their job is does not matter what their job entails.They need to take ownership of what they need to do. Ask their suggestions as to what they think can streamline or make the work they do more effective, but it still needs to be inline with the business strategy.

This makes them feel that they have a say and that they are being listened to. By doing this the people reporting to me get the job done quicker and more effective with better efficiency. The people feel more part of the business. It makes them think and not just do the work in one simple way. People spent most of there time at work irrespective if you run your own business or working for a public or private sector. It must be a pleasure for them to get up in the morning and for them to arrive at work. A pleasurable environment needs to be created at work.

Even though you do not have all the answers it is sometimes good just to listen and do your research. Make time available for the people/employees that report to you. Involve yourself in the operation so that they know you. With this you do not force respect, but the employees reporting to you gives you respect. Not just in the work place, but wherever they might see you.
