Why leaders need to align their organization using Appreciative Inquiry
This current world wide economic environment has presented new and unforeseen challenges to traditional business models and to what makes a good leader. Businesses that are not anticipative, adaptable, and flexible and focused on productivity have been hardest hit and many may not survive. This is a challenging time for leaders in charting a course for their organization. These times bring life to the ancient quote from Publilius Syrus that “Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm”.
What is clear as we emerge from this economic storm is that the pace of change will continue. We need to rethink how to do long term planning as what was developed a year ago, may no longer be valid. We need to focus on engaging talent at all levels in the organization as the collective intelligence of all employees is needed for success. Leaders need to focus on aligning resources in developing a common image of the future of the organization and to balance the need for strategy and planning with the need for agility.
Appreciative Inquiry is a fantastic way for leaders to gain positive perspective on whole systems change. The fundamental premise of Appreciative Inquiry is that human systems move in the direction of what is being focused on either operationally or strategically. If the focus is "problem solving" then that is the direction the organization takes. If it is infinite possibilities, then that becomes the focus. By focusing on the infinite possibilities rather than the limitations and by engaging the collective intelligence and passion that exists within all organizations provides a compass for leaders to help navigate through the challenging times and builds a strong commitment to the future by all who are engaged because the future is ours.
