Effective communication is not as easy as it may seem

We all communicate, everyday, almost every hour of our waking lives. Perhaps next to breathing, the next most done thing is communicating. We communicate by our actions, our eyes and most often verbally. How many of us are trained to communicate? Perhaps 0.0001% or even lesser, but we still manage to get across what we intend, if not the first time then after two or more attempts. I always wondered why communication is not a subject taught in schools along with Physics, History and Mathematics.

One might argue that Physics, History or Maths is not understood by experience, but communication is something we learn as we go along. But look deeper and you will see that even illiterate persons are sometimes great at investments and managing their own businesses. They can understand the basics of Physics like gravity, motion, light, etc. and are mostly aware of customs and beliefs and their origins.

Coming back to teaching Communications in a formal manner, I have noticed young executives, sometimes police personnel, and even politicians attending classes that boast of improving communication skills. Why not children? Communication Skills is a big seller in the corporate world but not in schools. Strange I think.

Are you wondering why am I making such a big thing about communications? Well, in my opinion it is the reason for many a mistakes made in this world, many a dollars wasted and lots of mismanagement. I also believe that communication needs to be redefined to mean speaking and listening. I know it includes both, but most people think that by speaking articulately or by using difficult words they become good communicators. Do they?
