Las u „Het Doel?“ Herinnert u zich Herbie nog? Het Constraintstheorie model van Eliyahu Goldratt is het praktische resultaat van het werk van Eli Goldratt over „hoe men na moet denken“. In een aantal boeken, beschreef Goldratt bepaalde denkprocessen en hun toepassingen.
 

Oorzaak en Effect in de Theory of Constraints

Centraal binnen het TOC concept staat de erkenning van oorzaak en effect. Vergelijk: Oorzaak- en Gevolgdiagram. De denkprocessen van de Theory of Constraints geven ons een stappenreeks die oorzaak en gevolg en onze ervaring en intuïtie combineren om kennis te bereiken. TOC is een verifieerbare filosofie. Door te weten hoe wij zouden moeten denken, kunnen wij de wereld rondom ons beter begrijpen; door deze beter te begrijpen kunnen wij verbeteren.
 

Organisaties zijn een complex web van mensen, apparatuur, methodes, materialen en metingen. Deze complexheid van details is al erg genoeg. Voeg daaraan de dynamische complexiteit van veranderende klanten, leveranciers, werknemersbestand, regelgevingen, enz. toe en u krijgt een beeld van de uitdaging die door een managementteam van tegenwoordig onder ogen wordt gezien.


Traditioneel heeft het management de organisatie verdeeld in kleinere, hanteerbaardere stukken. De doelstelling is om de prestatie van elk onderdeel te maximaliseren. De totale verbetering wordt verondersteld gelijk te zijn aan de som van de kleinere verbeteringen.


Maar dit is een verkeerde denkwijze! De Theory of Constraints beweert dat een verandering in de meeste variabelen in een organisatie slechts een kleine invloed op de totale prestatie - op de bottom line - zal hebben. Er zijn maar zeer weinig variabelen, misschien maar één, waar een significante verbetering van de lokale prestatie een significante verbetering van de totale prestatie veroorzaakt. Zulk een variabele wordt een „Constraint“ (Beperkende Factor) genoemd. U kunt het met de zwakste schakel van een ketting vergelijken. Vergelijk: Gantt Grafiek.


De stappen in het Theory of Constraints. aanpak

De essentie van het aanpak van TOC is dat als u meer van uw doel wilt bereiken, u dan het volgende dient te doen:

  1. Identificeer uw constraint.
  2. Focus op de constraint. Een bedrijf moet eerst zijn doel en de noodzakelijke condities voor het bereiken ervan weten. Dan moet deze de constraint (s) identificeren, die het niveau van de voltooiing van dat doel beperken.
  3. Ga ermee door. Een proces van continue verbetering:

    1. Identificeer de constraint.

    2. Onderzoek deze.

    3. Maak alle alle andere operaties ondergeschikt aan de noodzaak om de constraint te onderzoeken.

    4. Als na stap #2 en #3 meer capaciteit nodig is om aan de marktvraag te voldoen, verbeter dan de constraint.

    5. Ga terug naar stap #1, maar laat inertie niet de beperkende factor van het systeem worden.
