Bases del Poder SocialLos procesos del poder son profundos, complejos, y a menudo encubiertos, en nuestra sociedad. Las Bases del Poder Social de French y Raven es una teoría que identifica cinco (seis) bases o fuentes del poder (de organización) social:

  1. Poder de recompensa. Este origen se basa en la percepción de poder obtener beneficios o quitar algunas consecuencias negativas.

  2. Energía coactiva. Ésta es la percepción de la capacidad de castigar a quienes no concuerdan con sus ideas o demandas.

  3. Energía legítima (autoridad de organización). Esta forma de poder se basa en la opinión que alguien tiene el legítimo derecho de determinar el debido comportamiento, producto de haber ganado una elección o haber sido convocado a una posición de responsabilidad.   4. Poder de Referencia. Éste es el poder proveniente de la asociación con otras personas que posean poder.

  5. Energía experta. Este tipo de poder se basa en la tenencia de un conocimiento, experiencia, capacidad o habilidad distintiva.

  6. Similar a 5: Energía de la información. Este tipo de poder se basa en la capacidad de controlar la información necesaria para que otros puedan alcanzar una meta importante.

Los cinco principios de la teoría de las Bases del Poder Social empiezan con la asunción que el poder y la influencia implican la relación de por lo menos dos agentes. La teoría discute que la reacción del agente de recepción es el enfoque más útil para explicar los fenómenos de la influencia y el poder social.


French y Raven examinó el efecto del poder derivado de las distintas bases de la atracción y resistencia al uso del poder. La atracción y la resistencia son el sentimiento del recipiente hacia el agente que utiliza energía. Concluyen que el uso de las distintas fuentes de poder tiene diversas consecuencias.

Por ejemplo, la energía coactiva disminuye típicamente la atracción y causa alta resistencia. Mientras que el poder de la recompensa aumenta la atracción y crea niveles mínimos de resistencia.


French y Raven también concluyeron que “cuanto más legítima es la coerción [precibida como tal], producirá menos resistencia y menos desatención”.
