Kulturell IntelligensKulturell Intelligens är förmågan att klara av/hantera de olika nationella, företags- och yrkesmässiga kulturer som beskrivits av Christopher Earley och Elaine Mosakowski i HBR av Oktober 2004. CQ är förmågan att förstå obekanta sammanhang och att anpassa sig därefter. De beskriver tre källor till Cultural Intelligence.


Tre källor till Kulturell Intelligens

  1. Huvudet/Kognitiv/(insiktsmetoden).  och tabun i utländska kulturer, kommer inte att fungera så bra eller passa sig.

  2. Kroppen/Fysisk, materiell. Du kommer inte att avväpna din utländska värd, gäster eller kollegor genom att helt enkelt visa dig förstående för deras kultur; dina handlingar och uppförande måste bevisa att du har i viss utsträckning redan gått in deras värld.

  3. Hjärtat/Emotionellt/motivation. Att anpassa sig till en ny kultur handlar om att komma över hinder och bakslag. Människor kan göra det, endast om de tror på sin egen effektivitet.

Medans den delar många likheter med Emotionell Intelligens Goleman, så går Cultural Intelligence/Kulturell Intelligens ett steg längre, genom att göra en person rustad för att skilja ut beteenden frambringade av kulturen i fråga från beteenden som är karakteristiska för särskilda individer, från de som man kan finna hos alla människor.


Betydelse av Kulturell Intelligens

Varför Kulturell Intelligens? I en mer och mer diversifierande affärsmiljö, så måste chefer kunna navigera till och genom skogssnår av vanor, gester och antaganden som definierar deras medarbetares skillnader. Utländska kulturer finns överallt. I andra länder självklart, men också inom företaget, i professioner och olika regioner. Samspelet med olika individer ställer krav på en känslighet och anpassningsförmåga. Och den personal som har en större andel av dessa karaktärsdrag, är inte nödvändigtvis de som tycker om den stora sociala framgången i den familjära omgivningen.
 

Personer, som är de mest socialt lyckade bland deras vänner, har ofta den största svårigheten att förstå kulturella främmande människor, och till att acceptera dem. De som fullständigt förenar sig med vanorna och normer i deras infödda kultur, kan vara de som mest skiljer ut sig, när de går in en annan kultur. Ibland kan de något mer fristående personerna från deras egna kultur kan lättare adoptera vanor och till och med det kroppsspråk som förekommer hos värden. De är naturliga observatörer och åstadkommer lätt ett medvetet försök till att anpassa sig till formen.
 

Öka din Kulturell Intelligens

Earley och Mosakowski drar slutsatsen att den som är någorlunda på alerten, motiverad och balanserad, kan nå fram till en godtagbar CQ. De rekommenderar ett tillvägagångssätt uppdelat på sex steg för att odla din kulturella intelligens:

  1. Undersök din CQ-styrkor och svagheter. På så sätt upprättar du en utgångspunkt.

  2. Välj träning som fokusar på dina svagheter.

  3. Applicera denna träning.

  4. Organisera ett stöd och support i din egen organisation.

  5. Gå in i den kulturella uppsättningen. Starta med att fokusera på din styrkor.

  6. Omvärdera (360° review). Definiera eventuellt vidareutbildning.
