문화지능Christoper Earley와 Elaine Mosakowski는 2004년 HBR 10월호에서 문화지능을 국가, 기업 그리고 직업문화에 대처할 수 있는 능력으로 기술하였다. CQ는 생소한 상황을 이해하고, 조정하는 능력이다. 그들은 문화지능의 3가지 원천을 다음과 같이 묘사하고 있다.


문화지능의 3가지 원천

  1. 머리/인지적. 외국문화에 대한 신념, 습관, 금기사항을 무턱대고 암기하는 것은 충분하지 않을 것이다.

  2. 몸/물리적. 단지 당신이 그들의 문화를 이해한다는 것을 보여줌으로써 당신의 외국인 주인, 손님, 동료들을 무시하지 않을 것이다: 당신의 행동과 태도가 당신이 이미 어느정도 그들의 세계에 발을 들여놓았다는 것을 증명해야 한다.

  3. 가슴/정서적/동기부여적. 새로운 문화에 맞게 조정하는 것은 장애물과 방해를 극복하는 것을 포함한다. 사람들은 단지 그들 자신의 능력을 믿어야만 그렇게 행동할 수 있다.

문화지능은 감성지능의 상당부분을 공유하고 있지만 감성지능, Cultural Intelligence [문화 지능]는 낯선 문화에 의해 생성되는 행동과, 특정개인에게 한정되고 인간에게 보편적인 행동을 구별할 수 있도록 해줌으로써 한걸음 더 나아가게 해준다.


문화지능의 중요성

왜 문화지능인가? 점차로 다양해지는 사업환경에서, 매니저들은 동료들의 차이를 규정짓는 습관, 제스쳐, 가정들의 숲을 뚫고 나갈 수 있어야한다. 외래 문화는 도처에 있다. 다른 국가는 물론 기업, 직업, 종교 등. 그러한 환경에서 개인들과의 상호작용을 할 경우 감수성과 적응성이 필요하다. 그러고 그러한 특징을 많이 지니고 있는 사람들은 반드시 가족구성에서 위대한 사회적 성공을 누리는 사람들은 아니다.
 

친구들 사이에서 사회적으로 가장 성공한 사람들도 종종 문화적 이방인을 이해하고, 그들에 의해 수용되는데 어려움을 갖고 있다. 자신의 원래 문화적 습관과 규범을 완전하게 지닌 사람들은 다른 문화를 접할 때 가장 고립되기 쉬울 수 있다. 때때로 자신들의 문화로부터 다소 격리된 사람들이 익숙치 않은 주인의 습관이나 바디랭귀지 등을 좀 더 쉽게 수용할 수 있다. 그들은 자연스러운 관찰자이며 적응하기 위해 의식적인 노력을 한다.
 

당신의 문화지능을 키우기

Earley Mosakowski는 누구든 합리적으로 주의를 받고, 동기부여되고 균형이 잡혀 있으면 상응하는 문화지능을 획득할 수 있다고 결론지었다. 그들은 문화지능을 키울 수 있는 6단계의 접근법을 추천한다.

  1. 당신의 문화지능의 강점과 약점을 조사해보라. 이러한 방식으로 출발점을 삼을 수 있다.

  2. 자신의 약점에 집중하는 훈련을 선정하라.

  3. 이와 같은 훈련을 적용해보라.

  4. 조직내에서 지원토록 하라.

  5. 문화적 경험(cultural setting)을 시작하라. 당신의 강점에 집중함으로써 시작하라.

  6. 재평가하라 (360°). 더 나은 훈련을 정의할 수 있게 해준다.
