Intelligenza CulturaleL'Intelligenza Culturale (CQ) è la capacità di affrontare le culture nazionali, aziendali e professionali come descritto da Christopher Earley e da Elaine Mosakowski nel HBR dell'ottobre 2004. Il CQ è la capacità di capire contesti sconosciuti ed di aggiustarli. Gli autori descrivono tre fonti di Intelligenza Culturale.


Tre fonti di Intelligenza Culturale

  1. La Testa/Cognitivo. L'apprendimento a memoria su credenze, abitudini e tabu delle culture straniere, non funzionerà bene.

  2. Il Corpo/Fisico. Non disarmerete i vostri ospiti o colleghi stranieri, semplicemente mostrandogli che capite la loro cultura; le vostri azioni e i comportamenti devono dimostrare che già in parte siete entrati nel loro mondo.

  3. Il Cuore/ Irrazionale/motivazionale. Per adattarsi ad una nuova cultura bisogna sormontare gli ostacoli e i lati negativi. La gente può farlo soltanto se crede nella propria efficacia.

Mentre condivide molte delle proprietà dell'intelligenza emotiva, Intelligenza Culturale va oltre permettendo ad una persona di distinguere i comportamenti prodotti dalla cultura in questione dai comportamenti che sono peculiari di un individuo in particolare e da quelli che si trovano in tutti gli esseri umani.


Importanza di Intelligenza Culturale

Perchè Intelligenza Culturale? In un ambiente di business sempre più vario, i manager devono potere navigare attraverso abitudini, gesti e presupposti che definiscono le differenze dei loro colleghi. Le culture straniere sono dappertutto. In altri paesi, certamente, ma anche nelle società, nelle vocazioni e nelle regioni. Interagire con gli individui richiede sensibilità ed adattabilità. E la gente che abbonda di queste caratteristiche, non sono necessariamente quelli che godano del maggiore successo sociale nelle relazioni familiari.
 

La gente che ha più successo, socialmente parlando, fra i suoi amici, ha spesso grandi difficoltà a capire culture sconosciute, e ad essere accettato da loro. Coloro che incarnano completamentele le abitudini e le norme della loro cultura natale, possono essere  i più stranieri quando entrano in un'altra cultura. A volte, la gente distaccata dalla propria cultura, adotta più facilmente le abitudini e perfino il linguaggio del corpo di un ospite sconosciuto. Èssi sono osservatori naturali e facilmente fanno uno sforzo cosciente per adattarsi al nuovo sistema.
 

Crescere la vostra Intelligenza Culturale

Earley e Mosakowski concludono che: chiunque sia ragionevolmente attento, motivato e posato, può raggiungere un CQ accettabile. Essi suggeriscono un metodo a 6 fasi per coltivare la vostra intelligenza culturale:

  1. Esamini le vostre forze e debolezze di CQ. In questo modo stabilite un punto di partenza.

  2. Selezionare la formazione che più si adatta a colmare le vostre debolezze.

  3. Applicare l'addestramento.

  4. Organizzare il supporto nella propria organizzazione.

  5. Entrare nelle problematiche culturali. Iniziare con un focus sulle vostre forze.

  6. Rivalutare a (360°). Possibilmente definire ulteriori addestramenti.
