Goldratt's Strategy and Tactic (S&T) Tree
Richard Melrose, Consultant, United States

Contributors have noted the importance of organizational and individual participation, engagement, contribution, buy-in, line of sight, etc. To underwrite the successful execution of rigorous and robust strategies.
Likewise contributors have stressed the need for unambiguous communication of the enterprise strategy at the levels of detail necessary for those who must execute, monitor and adjust.
Eli Goldratt's Strategy and Tactic Tree (S&T Tree) is an analysis and communication tool, and provides a very workable framework for accomplishing all of this, and more.
The approach produces a hierarchy of steps each involving one action and one result, which have been tested, individually and collectively, using necessity and sufficiency logic, to assure the efficacy of the entire strategy.
In Goldratt's parlance, the goal: "make more money, now and in the future" tops the tree. In Goldratt's current viable vision context, the money-making goal comes with the additional notion of becoming an "ever-flourishing" enterprise.
While Goldratt understandably sees things mostly in "Theory of Constraints" terms, the S&T Tree framework imposes no such limitations. Indeed all of the prerequisites, performance levers and insights from other disciplines that drive enterprise health and value fit comfortably into the S&T Tree framework.
Moreover, a low-cost ($225) software package (Flying Logic) has removed one of the impediments to S&T Tree development, documentation and communication, as it handles all of the logic diagrams and keeps the tree neat and tidy. Flying Logic was developed in cooperation with Northrop Grumman. Now, enterprise wide, strategic planners can move from the highest level organizational goals to a comprehensive, multi-tiered, fully justified set of implementation steps, with aplomb.
