How is Social Marketing Different from Regular Marketing?

Just been through a course and I'm anxcious to know more about it. Can anyone help me? In what ways does social marketing differ from regular marketing? Thanks.

Social Marketing and Regular Marketing
E. van Rappard, Entrepreneur, Netherlands
Social marketing is nothing but regular marketing in the social market place.
The subject is different (and thus the instruments differ). But the basic methodologies come from traditional marketing, even the four P's still apply. Social marketeers tend to disagree because of the commercial connotation of 'marketing'. In my opinion (a traditional marketeer with some education on social marketing as well), the difference is mostly emotional, driven by the experts themselves.

Thanks, I agree with your ideas. Also I'd like to know what is the behaviour of consumers in social marketing, is it different? Thanks a lot.

Social and traditional marketing apply the same 4 Ps to achieve sales. But their aimed end results differ:
- Social marketing is done not for profit maximization, but to achieve some social purpose.
- Traditional marketing's aim is to purely maximise profits.

The concept of social marketing is being considered as a main stream marketing concept. Here the business is not only conduct but also gives back to the society by delivering good and better products which in turn works for the welfare of the society.
We find that this concept of marketing is followed due to the problems of environmental deterioration, population explosion, shortage of resources and also because of the fact that the social services are neglected.
Social marketing is based on the concept of doing some social good, but commercial marketing aims at the concept of financial profits.
In recent times, social marketing is being seen as a concept where all marketers need to contribute and this also increases their goodwill.

3 things come to mind when thinking about the differences between commercial marketing versus social marketing:
1. The OBJECT of it: goods and services versus behavior change
2. The PURPOSE of it: financial gain versus societal gain
3. The COMPETITION: commercial competitors versus the current (unchanged) behavior.
