Theory of Constraints in Mining
H Singh, Student (University), Australia

Hi All, I am currently pursuing a project on the application of TOC in Underground Coal Mining in Australia. I am looking for ideas, best practices, case studies or other resources that could be of help in this regard. Please experts, help me out here and let me know if there are any resources you are aware of and may be helpful. Thanks.

Theory of Constraints in Mining
Arrie van Niekerk, Business Consultant, South Africa
Hi, I have done over 50 implementations in mines. It covered all the major mining methods and minerals including gold, platinum, iron ore, manganese, coal, copper, chromium, nickel and we have seen some very good results.
The dilemma: No two mines are the same and we don't have anything close to a "generic" solution. Our basic methodology works well, but you have to dig deep and find the real constraints, the flow solutions, buffer management, new measures and daily management practices for the specific mine. In our experience, finding the physical bottlenecks and TOC flow solution is the easy part. Dealing with leadership and management issues is much more difficult.
I don't know how I can help you via e-mail; it will be very difficult.
Hope this helps...

You are already in contact with Arrie van Niekerk. He is a well known TOC expert in mining. I suggest to visit his pages for general information about this topic and I am sure he will support you as much as possible.
Arrie wrote: "...Dealing with leadership and management issues is much more difficult...". I tend to say, that this is an issue in almost all industries.

TOC principles remain the same no matter which industry it is applied in. An important issue is to ensure stability in the operation, so that the constraint does not wander around from day to day.

Hi, I guess one of the best sources of information regarding TOC implementations is in the website. I just found that there is one video called "Bolton, R. (2013). 'Mine to market - Throughput focused mining' . TOCICO International Conference: 11th Annual Worldwide Gathering of TOC Professionals, Bad Nauheim, Germany, Theory of Constraints International Certification Organization. I hope you find this interesting or you could search some more topics related in this site.
