Yes! All is about organization leverage. Managers have to elicit peak performance from their individuals in the team, because the output of the organization is the combined output of all team members. It is not putting individuals in a defensive position, it is a business principle to leverage any organization.
Otherwise, it is a case for creating your own business, if you feel on a defensive position. Some large companies allow their staffs to use company resources to create a firm inside the firm itself. It is another way to keep the job tenure.
