Publisher (books) goes Social Media; Do or Donít?

I am writing a thesis for a publisher in the Netherlands and I am examining the possibilities for the implementation of social media. How could we reach potential readers? Is it relevant to profile the publisher company or should we stimulate our authors to use new social media? I am looking for theories, suggestions any ideas?
