CONDITIONS to implement it successfully are:

How the best results are achieved from benchmarking, making it most beneficial to a company depends largely on many elements such as: size of the company, location, level of business strategy, culture and political environment of the country, etc.
Besides that, in order to make the results comparable, a uniformity of measures must be applied so that results can be appreciated by a company when their performance is compared against the average or the top-performing ones of the benchmarked companies.

I would add to the list of conditions that if you do a benchmarking yourself you should open your mind, change your mindset, as management, that you can learn from others, perhaps being the best, although these others could be different from you.
And another condition is that you don't compare with averages, but with organisations who are better. With organisations who are in the top 10% or top 25% of best performers. 8-10-2016
