Description of Whisper Number. Explanation. |
|
Definition Whisper Number. Description.
A Whisper Number is an unofficial corporate earnings estimate that is "whispered" amongst security analysts, and their main clients. Corporations are not allowed to selectively disclose material information to institutional investors or other important investors.
If earnings per share are below the whisper number, but above the consensus official analysts estimate, this may result in disappointment and in a price decrease.
Although these mysterious numbers have proved a useful indication of corporate results in many occasions, investors are wise to watch out for potential manipulation by scrupulous people and verify what is whispered with fundamental analysis and technical analysis.
