Non-Governmental Organization

Description of Non-Governmental Organization. Explanation.

Definition Non-Governmental Organization. Description.

A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) is a generic term for non-profit organizations that have a particular focus and which are organized outside and independently of institutionalized political structures.

They pursue issues of interest such as social, ethical, cultural, political, scientific, environmental, religious, and philanthropic considerations for their members by activities such as lobbying, persuasion, projects, programs, and/or direct action.

An exact definition of a NGO is hard and debatable. But an NGO is never constituted as a government bureaucracy, a political party, a company, a criminal organization or a guerrilla group

Globalization during the 20th century gave rise to the formation of many NGOs. Many problems are difficult to solve within a nation and some people believe it is desirable to somewhat counterbalance the power of multinational capitalist enterprises. Interestingly, NGOs are increasingly using management methods and principles as used in those private enterprises to be more effective.

Many international NGOs have a consultative status with United Nations agencies relevant to their area of work.
